While Adina and the children are on vacation I thought I’d take the opportunity to post a few pictures from me in Iraq.  As you pray for me and my family, please do not forget my brother Joe who is also here – a Marine in another part of the country.

Prayer Breakfast

Jeremy writes,
Last Friday I had the opportunity to attend the National Prayer Breakfast here at the palace in Iraq (once a palace belonging to Sadaam Hussein).  Again, some parts are geared towards the children, but the rest of you will appreciate the architecture inside the palace at least.  I said “Men’s” Prayer Breakfast in the video but the event was gender inclusive (if that doesn’t sound politically correct).  I pray you are all well.

I am thankful for the fellowship that God has provided here.  I am part of a Men’s Bible Study going through Romans on Monday nights, and about to join another one going through church history on Thursdays!  And of course I go to church before I head to work on Sunday mornings.  Lest you think that all I do is attend religious activities, I still get in my 12 hours of work a day, every day – I am blessed that these activities take place when I’m not at work.

Elijah couldn’t understand how riding a horse would make him a COWboy – he wanted to ride a cow to be a cowboy! Makes sense to me!

Vacation Plans for Adina, Elijah, Merry and Baby

We are going to be vacationing for two weeks starting on Wednesday. . . for those of you in close distance of where we will be, please call and arrange to get together with us if you can – we will still be on our cell phone 843-819-1332

May 14th: Fly to Kansas and drive to uncle David’s in Guthrie, Oklahoma

May 20th or 21st: Drive to Bellevue, Nebraska and visit with old friends

May 25th: Potluck reunion at the Base Lake at 5:00 PM (first pavilion on the left as you enter the park area next to the BIG playground.)  Bring meat for your family to put on the grill (we will have one going) a side and/or dessert to share and whatever your family likes to drink.  Since this will be a true potluck, there is no need to RSVP, so bring yourself, and invite people who may not know, but would like to come.  We have no intention of leaving anyone out!  Of course my superduper party-planning friend Whitney is behind this, so if you have questions or need directions or anything, you can post here, or call her at 402-502-9025.

May 27th or 28th: Return to Kansas to fly back home to Charleston.

Here’s some video to give you some idea of my life in Iraq. It’s mostly geared towards the kids so forgive the banter and the playing with toys. I miss all of you and am thankful for the many blessings of love and fellowship God has lavished upon me, evidenced by His mercy and your many letters and warm greetings. I echo the words of the classic movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life” when I say, “No man is poor who has friends.”

Homeschooling Ideas. . . A Brainstorming Letter to Jeremy

I’ve been looking at different preschool curriculum things for Elijah (and Merry soon enough – she will be two before we know it!) . I still plan to go to the curriculum fair/conference in Columbia in June, but here are some resources I have put on our school list on Amazon.

What I’m thinking about doing (encouraged by Naomi and Joy Folken) is to set up a morning routine/circle time that is about 10 minutes that would include a song we learn to get started (changed weekly or monthly, probably), a bible verse and/or catechism (using ABC bible verses – this author is recommended on Monergism), shapes and colors review, a manners or other activity (the same one for the whole week maybe also) then one story that is about our theme or letter that week (read all week) Then we could get into whatever we are working on in phonics and math after that. The cool thing about this is that once you set a routine into order, they LOVE it and require each component from you and learn very well whatever is included in that 10 minutes. Even if you have a fun day planned like a day out at the Children’s museum, or strawberry picking, or whatever, you can still do your 10-minute thing and have “school” to review what you know and at least they are still learning a song, a bible verse, shapes and colors and getting one story. Also, you could do the routine with him on days you are home (after the baby is born even) maybe even between the gym and when you return to work – if it is only 10 minutes long.

Anyway, I’m going to look into a few different curriculums, I don’t know if I showed you these. . .
Of course the hooked on phonics or sing, spell, read and write which I’ve already liked the looks of and have on my Amazon list. . .here are some others also:
https://www.abchomepreschool.com/products.php?category_id=15
Sonlight http://www.sonlight.com/core-p-3-4.html
http://www.shirleys-preschool-activities.com/preschool-curriculum.html#abc-fun
https://www.abeka.com/ABekaOnline/SampleGallery.aspx (the preschool stuff is first) I am going to take a hard look at this at the curriculum fair – I would say I don’t like Abeka, but Kristin said that they ruined their reputation (in some people’s eyes) as a good curriculum by going past K3-5 – that their preschool is the best stuff she’s seen. . . I’ve never seen it, so I think I need to give it a fair shake.

The last thing I may do because all the ones I want to look at may not be at the curriculum fair, is put a message on the homeschool board to see if I can look at someone’s Hooked on Phonics or Sing, Spell, Read and Write to see how they compare.
